Kenya banned single-use plastics in 2017. But the packaging inside ecommerce orders has been a blind spot for most online retailers — until now.

At Zawadi by Amina, we've been on a 3-year journey to eliminate all single-use plastic from our packaging. We're currently at 60% elimination, and we're on track to hit 100% by December 2027.

What we've done so far: Replaced bubble wrap with shredded recycled paper. Switched all mailer bags to compostable cassava-starch alternatives. Eliminated plastic tape entirely — we now use water-activated paper tape. And moved all product labels to FSC-certified recycled paper.

What's next: The hardest part is inner product packaging — many of our suppliers still use plastic. We're working with 40 suppliers to help them transition, offering a packaging co-investment fund to help cover the upfront cost.

The numbers: In 2024, we shipped 18,000 orders. Our old packaging would have generated 540kg of single-use plastic. With our new approach, that number is down to 216kg. By 2027, it will be zero.

Kenya's environment deserves better. And we believe Kenyan businesses can lead the way. If you're a supplier or another brand interested in joining our packaging coalition, reach out via WhatsApp.
